There’s something exhilarating about waking up in a place that seems other-worldly, and Cambodia is one of those places. Not only is it known for its ancient temples, it’s also steeped in history, nature escapes, and luxurious island resorts - what a perfect setting for a family getaway!
The Cambodian Riviera had long battled a troubled history, led by a dictator once upon a time. Despite its dark colonial past, Cambodia has worked its way to become one of the top destinations in Asia, if not the world, by making the most of what has been left from those dark times.
Family-Friendly Things To Do in Cambodia
Cambodia is full of jaw-dropping sights that one simply cannot miss, and offers the adventurous family a mix of stunning landscapes, breathtaking ancient temples, relaxing tropical beaches and rich marine life. The picturesque country offers a wide array of activities for every member of the family. Here are a few must-do’s!:
Experience the Tuk Tuk
Also known as auto rickshaws, tuk tuks are a motorised development of the traditional pulled or cycle rickshaw, and are two-wheeled carriages pulled behind a motorbike. Named after the sound made by their small-capacity engines, tuk tuks are often found in tourist areas, around markets, or cruising the streets for fares. The fares differ between different people, but as a rough guide, a 5 minute trip is usually around 4,000-6,000 riel (US$1-$1.50). They’re a cheap way to get around, and allows you to enjoy the scenery around you while catching a light breeze.
Visit a floating village
If you’re in Siem Reap, a must-visit is Kampong Phluk village! A leisurely boat ride will take you through a series of village homes, schools and other structures built over water and accessible only by boat. Then the boat ride will venture into the opening of Tonlé Sap Lake , the massive freshwater lake which occupies the centre of Cambodia, and is the perfect spot for sunsets to end the day!
Cycle around Angkor Wat
Tour around the famous Angkor Archeological Park on a bike! It’s a quick and fun way to see the area and appreciate the ancient temple’s architectural beauty as well as surrounding nature!
Capture Angkor Wat at sunrise
See the sun rise behind the largest religious monument in the world! The gates of Angkor Wat open at 5:00am to allow for this magical moment - yes it’s early, but the breathtaking sight is well worth it!
Visit other temples
Aside from Angkor Wat, there are thousands of other temples around Cambodia of all sizes and from different eras, each steeped with history and unique architectural features to reflect their specific function at the time of building, such as Banteay Srei , Neak Pean , Bayon and Ta Prohm .
Enjoy the marvellous beaches
